Funding contribution to help immigration and asylum solicitors

Immigration and asylum solicitors can continue to save hundreds of pounds on accreditation after the Law Society of England and Wales extended a deal with the Ministry of Justice (MoJ).

The funding contribution for members who are looking to gain or renew immigration and asylum accreditation which was introduced last year is now expected to run until 31 December 2025.

The scope of the contract has been expanded so that as well as the MoJ funding exam and application fees for senior caseworkers, it will now also fund these for casework assistants and trainee casework assistants.

“Immigration and asylum solicitors play a vital role in ensuring access to justice but there is a severe lack of capacity in the sector,” said Law Society president Richard Atkinson.

“While the environment for immigration firms remains challenging, this is another piece of positive news to help mitigate the difficulties firms are facing, following on from the legal aid fee increases announced last year.

“This funding contribution will save members hundreds of pounds and some firms thousands of pounds.

“The initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to supporting immigration and asylum solicitors, reducing financial expenses and encouraging retention of talent within the sector.”

Notes to editors

• For those eligible, there will be a saving per person of £782.40 for initial accreditation and £482.40 for reaccreditation for senior caseworkers. For casework assistants a saving of £717.60 for accreditation and trainee casework assistants a saving of £277.20 (all figures include VAT).
