Special general meeting: outcome and next steps

A special general meeting was held on 23 July 2024. Our Council and leadership team will consider the outcome of the meeting and update on next steps in due course.

On Tuesday 23 July, we held a special general meeting (SGM) of Law Society members following the receipt of a requisition from 100 members under the bye-laws.

The meeting was called to debate and vote on a motion of no confidence in the Law Society’s ability to represent members who undertake conveyancing.

123 members present voted in favour of the motion, 207 voted against and 20 abstained.

“The Law Society Council and Board fully support the president and chief executive and are pleased with the outcome of today’s vote” said our Board chair, Amerdeep Somal and our deputy vice president, Mark Evans.

“We recognise the concerns raised by some of our members on this specific issue.

"However, it is also important to note that we have already taken steps to address these concerns by postponing the compulsory implementation of the updated TA6 form.

"We have also launched a consultation to ensure we understand the full range of member views.“

We are focused on continuing our work to represent and advocate for solicitors across England and Wales.

Next steps

In accordance with our bye-laws, there isn’t a requirement for any steps to be taken as a result of the vote that happened at the SGM.

However, our Council and leadership team will consider the views expressed and provide an update in due course.

Take part in the consultation

We’ve launched a consultation on the TA6 Property information form (5th edition) (2024).
