The training, education and experience involved in qualifying and practising as a solicitor mean that solicitors have a range of knowledge and skills that can bring value to roles outside one’s practice (whether in-house or in private practice).
In this practice note, we look at the regulatory implications of taking on these roles, or providing additional services, outside your role as a practising solicitor.
We consider how to manage these roles and provide these services to ensure that all parties are clear about:
- your status, and
- what protections they may have from regulation and consumer redress mechanisms
This practice note does not detail what legal liability you may have and does not give legal advice on this issue.
However, it is important that you carefully consider whether the role exposes you to liability and whether you should obtain indemnity insurance to cover any risks.
This practice note is the Law Society's view of good practice in this area, and is not legal advice. For more information, see the legal status.
